Overview • Produce a systematic cover-to-cover redesign of a classically beloved novel.
Solution • Lolita provided me with a challenging subject matter; How do you properly convey the feeling of a book with a controversial plot? The novel is told solely from the perspective of the main character, a middle-aged literature professor, Humbert Humbert. His first sight of the twelve-year-old Delores, whom he exclusively refers to as “Lolita”, is in the garden with flowers all around her and this is the moment he falls for her. Like the flowers used throughout the design, the story grows more complex as the reader proceeds until it is simply a jumbled mess as represented by the incongruent pattern on the back cover of the book. We only get to know Lolita by the narrator’s words and so by covering her eyes, her true essence, on the cover with her pet name, this only allows us to see her as the narrator intends.
